My portrait is a reflection on the role of consumerism in the world, specifically in contemporary Japanese culture.
In my travels to Japan, I was struck by the coexistence of two worlds- the commercial culture of ‘neo-Japan’ and the traditional values of ancient Japan. Japan is simultaneously a symbol for championing values of simplicity, frugality, and discipline whilst also venerating brands, material production and constant consumption. The samurai clad in branded armour represents the collision and contradictions of these two worlds.
